Packet Switching is a system that allows the VoIP to carry the useful voice data in form of packets and transmits them, one at a time, to the other end.
This means that only useful voice part is transmitted over the internet and the useless silence part is left out. During a VoIP call, the connection between two parties of a call opens only when a packet is sent or received. This naturally makes for a lot of savings in the bandwidth usage.
In this way Packet Switching has a distinct advantage over the traditional telephone connection which remains open all the time a conversation goes on.
